The Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

Fight Bacteria and Disease with Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing in Las Vegas & Henderson

Bacteria hide in the recesses of every person’s mouth; however, when they get out of control, they can lead to progressive periodontal disease. Without some kind of intervention, gum disease can lead to irreversible bone and tooth loss.

A deep dental cleaning in Las Vegas can help stop bacteria from continuing to cause destruction. This is the reason Dr. David J. Trylovich, Dr. Ryan S. Gifford, Dr. Brian P. Mantor, and Dr. Gary D. Goaslind commonly recommend periodontal scaling and root planing treatments to their patients who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease.

How Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing in Las Vegas Works

A deep dental cleaning is an in office procedure that effectively halts the earliest stages of periodontal disease. It can also reduce the periodontal pockets by up to three millimeters. This provides less space for bacteria and plaque to accumulate and result in infection.

During scaling and root planing, patients may receive a local anesthetic, if necessary. Sedation dentistry is also available upon request, but is not typically required. Hand instruments and an ultrasonic tool will be used to remove any accumulation of plaque and tartar deposits both above and below the gum line. Once the root surfaces are smooth, an antimicrobial solution may be used to irrigate the treatment sites. Post-operative instructions will be provided.

After scaling and root planing treatment, the gum tissues will ideally begin to reconnect with the teeth. This lessens the likelihood of further periodontal pockets from forming. Patients who have had this procedure must take very good care of their mouths following the treatment. The reduction or cessation of tobacco is highly suggested.
Scaling and root planing therapy is a common procedure to treat the occurrence of periodontal disease. To find out more about this procedure, please set up an appointment with Dr. Trylovich, Dr. Gifford, Dr. Mantor, and Dr. Goaslind in Las Vegas for your consultation.
